Where we learned it
It looked like a film festival. It was really a campaign.
In 2007, Brandon and Laura Millett co-founded the GI Film Festival to change how America sees its service members. When they started, they couldn't get a meeting with a major studio.
By the end, Warner Bros., Paramount, MGM and other studios were screening their military films with the festival first, and Disney hosted it on its own lot. The festival screened and promoted 400+ films, raised $5M+ in cash and in-kind support, and in 2019 was acquired by KPBS, San Diego's PBS station.
